Avian Influenza (Monographs in Virology) Because of its high impact on both animal and human health, avian influenza has become a matter of increasing public concern and growing scientific interest within the last decade. This volume gives an overview of the most important results of these research efforts and provides information about the ecology and epidemiology of avian influenza with particular emphasis on recent H5N1 outbreaks in China, Siberia and Europe. Several articles deal with new vaccination strategies, the use of antivirals and other control measures to combat outbreaks of avian influenza.Further chapters illustrate that molecular biology, culminating in the generation of influenza viruses by recombinant DNA technology, was instrumental in unraveling the roles of the viral hemagglutinin and polymerase as well as cellular signaling pathways and innate immunity in pathogenesis and interspecies transmission. Finally, the threat of a pandemic originating from avian influenza viruses is illustrated by the example of the Spanish influenza of 1918. This comprehensive publication on avian influenza viruses and their relevance for human influenza will be of great value to all influenza virologists, molecular biologists, public health scientists, veterinary virologists, ecologists, and scientists engaged in drug design and vaccine development.
Influenza: Human And Avian in Practice (In Practice Series) In the modern era where rapid and relatively easy global travel is commonplace, the spread of infectious diseases, particularly influenza, represents a very real and almost annual threat to communities worldwide. Current extensive and global interest in influenza lies in the increasingly common reports of the transmission of a number of avian influenza virus strains to humans. Due to the high morbidity and mortality rates observed in humans infected by these strains, influenza is currently under the spotlight. With its accessible approach, broken down into easy to read chapters, this book tells the medical practitioner everything they need to know about influenza and the implications of avian flu. Besides reviewing and updating the biological characteristics of the influenza viruses, this key text explains the epidemiological and immune mechanisms that have important roles in, and form the background to, the pathogenesis of influenza infection. The book covers: the clinical features of influenza as it presents in different population group; the current situation with respect to the use of vaccines for immunization against influenza; the nature and rationale behind the recent development of the anti-influenza drugs; and, the management of influenza in general practice. This revised and updated edition also includes the new NICE guidelines on the treatment of influenza. This is an indispensable guide for medical practitioners working in either the general community or industrial- or company-based practices. This highly topical book will also be found useful by hospital-based consultants, junior doctors, nursing staff and other individuals connected with the healthcare profession.
Avian Influenza: Prevention and Control (Wageningen UR Frontis Series)
Avian Influenza has become one of the biggest threats for human and animal health. The old paradigm was that the disease in waterfowl, poultry, pigs and man was caused by separate viruses that each stayed reasonably well within their own niche. The only danger to man was considered being infected by pigs, being the mixing vessel, where avian and human influenza viruses could come together and exchange genetic material to form new viruses that are potentially dangerous to man. This has dramatically proven wrong during the last decade, with huge outbreaks in the USA, Europe, and Asia. The H5N1 strain that caused human deaths in Hong Kong appeared to be transmitted directly from poultry to man. This initiated sudden awareness that pigs were not a necessary intermediate in the transmission chain. During the AI outbreaks in Italy, mutation of low-pathogenicity viruses into high-pathogenicity viruses in poultry appeared another new threat, and further evidence that the poultry sector had a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It put pressure on development of diagnostic methods that could be used in large monitoring programmes. In The Netherlands a human fatality, after increased reports of conjunctivitis during a H7N7 outbreak, signalled that different AI strains could be fatal to man. Also, the huge economic losses and difficulties in controlling the spread of the infection in densely populated poultry areas, problems with vaccination and lack of marker vaccines demonstrated that the current control policy must be improved. These events led to an international AI conference with experts from Asia, USA and Europe. In this book you will find new views on the issues, expert opinions and the results of in-depth discussions among avian experts of around the world that do not want to give up against this dangerous virus.

Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease: A Field and Laboratory Manual
Avian Influenza (AI) and Newcastle Disease (ND) are two devastating diseases of poultry, which cause losses to the poultry industry and influence the liveability of rural communities worldwide. Following the H5N1 epidemic they appear to be endemic at least in Asia, Eastern Europe, The Middle East and Africa. Particularly in case of AI outbreaks it is essential that infection is diagnosed promptly and that isolates are made available to the international scientific community. Currently, several organisations including OIE, FAO and the EC have organised training courses in affected areas. However, often these courses do not cover all aspects of AI/ND diagnosis but only certain aspects. This results in fragmented areas of knowledge and in the application of different diagnostic protocols in different parts of the world. The objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive approach to AI diagnosis ranging from the clinical elements that should trigger a suspicion in the field, to the post mortem technique, collection of samples, processing/ shipment of specimens, virological, serological and molecular diagnosis and guidelines for notification.
Avian Influenza Avian Influenza provides the first comprehensive guide covering the full spectrum of this complex and increasingly high-profile disease, its history and its treatment and control.
